TikTok Verification Requirements: What Actually Counts

Search tiktok verification and you get two claims repeated across the results. One says you cannot apply and TikTok simply selects accounts. The other quotes a rejection rate, usually around 85 percent, with no source attached.

We opened TikTok's own help page to check. The first claim is wrong, and the second does not appear anywhere in TikTok's documentation.

There is an application. It sits in the app, five taps deep.

So the standard advice, grow to some threshold and then apply, has nothing behind it. The threshold does not exist.

The four TikTok verification requirements

TikTok lists four groups. Three are housekeeping. The fourth is the one that decides it.

1. Identifiable

Your account needs a name, a profile picture, a bio, and at least one public post. An empty shell gets nowhere.

2. Active

You must have logged in during the past six months. Read that again: logged in. Not posted daily, not posted three times a week.

The posting quotas you see quoted around the web are not in TikTok's text.

3. Authentic

The account has to represent a real person, business, or organisation. Individuals verify their identity. Businesses need a Verified Business Account or an Organization Account.

Organisations need proof of official affiliation.

4. Notable

You must be featured in multiple news sources. TikTok then rules out three things by name: sponsored or paid media, social media posts, and outdated or irrelevant articles.

That exclusion list is the whole game. The press release you paid to place does not count. Your own Instagram post does not count.

A profile piece from 2019 that has nothing to do with what you do now does not count. What is left is coverage written because someone decided you were worth covering.

Why applications get turned down

Almost always the fourth requirement. The first three are within reach of anyone running an account seriously for a few months. Notability cannot be bought and cannot be farmed.

• Applying with no coverage at all, just a follower number. That number is not being read.
• Submitting paid placements as evidence. That is the exact category TikTok excludes.
• Submitting links to your own pages and posts. Social media does not count as a news source.
• Submitting coverage from years ago that no longer connects to the account.
• A mismatch between the account name and the name on your ID, with no explanation of the link.

There is a second group worth naming: people chasing a badge when the thing they actually need is a different threshold. Going live takes 1,000 followers, not verification. We covered that in the 1,000 follower rule for TikTok Live.

How to apply and when you hear back

2. 2Tap the Menu button at the top, then Settings and privacy.
3. 3Tap Account.
4. 4Tap Verification.
5. 5Tap Get started and follow the steps.

TikTok moved this into the app, so stop hunting for a web form. You hear back through an in-app notification within 30 days. If you are turned down, you can read the reason and reapply once the stated waiting period is over.

About services selling verification

Sellers offering to run the application for you turn up in growth communities constantly. The pitch has a shape you can learn to spot.

What the buyer actually loses, heaviest first.

• Criminal exposure. Forging an identity document and using a forged identity document are offences in essentially every jurisdiction, and the person who uses one is liable, not only the person who made it. Hand over your ID and your name is the one on the forgery.
• The badge, and probably the account. TikTok reserves the right to refuse or revoke verification obtained through impersonation or inauthentic activity, and says a badge can be removed at any time without notice. An account posing as a real person also risks removal under the impersonation rules.
• The account itself. You are giving a stranger your password and a photo of your ID. If the account earns, losing control of it costs the earnings, and that ID scan has a life of its own afterwards.

One more thing about that screenshot sellers like to show, the verified profile with roughly 13,000 followers. It does not prove 13,000 is the bar. It demonstrates exactly what TikTok said: follower count is not what is being assessed.

Four ways a badge gets taken back

Verification is not permanent. TikTok lists four triggers.

• You changed your username directly instead of submitting a username change request. This one catches people out, because changing a handle feels harmless.
• You transferred ownership of the account, so the verification no longer matches the person.
• Your account is no longer a Verified Business Account or an Organization Account.
• Repeated or severe violations of the Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.

TikTok adds a line worth remembering: the badge can be removed at any time, without prior notice.

What to aim at instead

If you are a seller or an ordinary creator, verification is realistically out of reach, because the notability test was built around people the press already writes about. That is fine. Buyers look at your content, your reviews, and how you answer a message.

Very few filter by badge.

The reachable targets are the ones with published numbers behind them: 1,000 followers to unlock Live, enough posts that the profile does not look abandoned, enough orders to collect real reviews.
